DETROIT, Mich. – The seventh-ranked Davenport women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to 466:33 in the last five matches as the Panthers scored one goal in the first half and added four more in the latter period to roll past Marygrove 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The Panthers also extend their win streak to nine and improve their record to 10-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
The Panthers saw five different players score with Karli Harris and Paige Eli each assisting two goals.
The Mustangs (3-8-0, 0-3-0 WHAC) became the latest victim to the Panthers strong defense despite recording seven shots on goal. DU keeper Michelle Marcus had to make three saves in the first half, four in the second but managed to post the eighth shutout on the year.
Davenport got its only goal in the opening half at 5:46 when Brenna Hartner received a pass from Eli and her shot from the lower right corner beat Mustang keeper Rachel Gilmore.
Although her five-match goal streak came to an end last Wednesday, Lizzie Paul started a new one when she headed in the second goal of the match off a cross by Thelma Gylfadottir in the 52nd minute. Paul has scored at least one goal in seven of the last nine contests.
The match became out of the Mustangs reach in the 67th minute. Harris connected to Kilee Lovelace, who's shot 15 yards out goes over keeper Kaitlyn Pusey for her first career goal.
In addition to the goal, Paul tallied an assist in the 71st minute. Abbey Tyson received the pass from Paul and took the ball to the 15 before taking the shot. Eli and Harris notched their second assists of the day as Natalie McHale beat Pusey in the lower left corner at 85:53.
The Panthers will travel down the Beltline to take on crosstown rival Aquinas Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Panthers and Saints are the only teams left in the WHAC with a perfect record.
