KINGSTON, R.I. – The Davenport women's hockey team opened the ACHA Division I Showcase with a 7-3 setback to Massachusetts Friday afternoon. Melissa Cresse's second goal of the season tied the game one apiece in the first period and Chantal Caraher, who assisted Cresse' goal, added two more in the third period. The Panthers return to Boss Ice Arena to open day two of the Showcase against Vermont Saturday at 11:50 a.m.

The Minutewomen jumped on the board 3:56 into the contest but a power play opportunity midway through the first period got the Panthers back on track. Cresse made a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that found the back of the net at the 12-minute mark. Despite evening the score, the Minutewomen regained the lead 33 seconds later and added another at 14:41.

UMass went into the locker room for the first intermission having outshot the Panthers 21-7.

Although both teams went scoreless in the middle period, Davenport stayed away from the penalty box for the first two periods but they couldn't capitalize in three power play chances in the second.

After the Minutewomen scored at 4:07 in the third period, Caraher cut the lead to 4-2 at the seven-minute mark when Kerri Rozeboom caused a turnover on a textbook fore-check deep in the UMass zone. The Minutewomen regained the 3-goal lead 2:45 later and added another at 11:42.

Caraher's second goal of the day arrived at 12:33 with help from Caitlin Harrison.

Post-Game Quote – Head Coach Tom Hofman

"The thing I like about our team is that we never give up. Less than two minutes after the UMass goal, we strung a few great passes together to break it out and got the puck to Chantal with speed in the neutral zone. She made no doubt by sliding it past the UMass goalie. But that was it. We gave up the last goal with just over four minutes to go. Playing this far away from home is tough for any team, especially a young team like ours. It hurts, but we will take this loss, learn from it and we'll be better for it in the long run."
