GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Lexie Boydston's first-period goal helped the Davenport women's hockey team cut the lead in half, but Michigan State regained the two-goal lead in the second period and added another with 5:11 in the game to down Panthers 4-1 Sunday morning and take the two-game Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association set. The Panthers have lost two straight and dropped their record to 6-6-0 overall, 6-4-0-0 in CCWHA play.
The Spartans got on the board at 14:55 when Lauren Grigg fired a shot on the left side that beat Smishek. Michigan State added on to their lead on Natalie Priscandaro's goal a second under the 10-minute mark.
After the Spartans committed a penalty, the Panthers punished them for their actions at 7:01 with Boydston's power play goal.
Sara Kuzava and
Darian Adams worked their way to find Boydston on the right side of the faceoff circle, where she sent the puck to the back of the net.
DU would head into the locker room for the first intermission trailing 2-1.
Aggression started to show in the second period as both teams combined for eight visits to the penalty box. In fact, each team had one 5-on-3 opportunity midway through the period. Michigan State, however, reclaimed the two-goal lead when Sydney Glanz fired a shot from the blue line that slid under Smishek and into the goal at 13:23.
Davenport's closest chance of cutting the lead down to one again came midway through the period when
Chantal Caraher's flicker from the left side of the goal line ricocheted off the goal post surrounded by Panthers and Spartans, creating the loudest ping that have sent the crowd on their feet assuming it went into the goal.
The Panthers went back into the locker room trailing 3-1.
Michigan State would collect the fourth and final goal at 5:11 in the final period. A defensive mistake by the Panthers allowed the Spartans to set up a 2-on-1 breakaway to put the game out of Davenport's reach.
Following a weekend off, and for the first time in six games, DU hits the road for its second longest trip of the season as it heads to Kingston, R.I. to take part of the Women's ACHA Division I Showcase. The Panthers start out the showcase taking on Massachusetts Nov. 15 at 11:50 a.m., followed by Vermont Nov. 16 and Northeastern Nov. 17.
