A win would clinch the regular season WHAC crown outright for the second straight season.
Davenport fell to Aquinas in the fall non-conference schedule but more than made up for it today with a thrilling 6-3 win over the Saints to claim at least a share of the league crown with one match remaining. DU lost at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by the tandem of
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes got DU a win by the slimmest of margins 9-7.
Turning to singles, DU got out of the gate a little slow seeing their top seeded player, Spiech, lose her first match since late February to fall behind 3-1. The remaining of the lineup picked up their leader though as they swept the remaining matches with only one going more than one set.
Angelica Woods was the most convincing while winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 while
Marcie Kooyers was the winner in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 10-3. Also posting wins were
Alyssa Fuentes at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1,
Kristi Kuzdal at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2 and
Katie VanDerLaan at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.
DU improves to 14-8 overall and remains undefeated in league play with only one match remaining against Indiana Tech next week, therefore clinching at least a share of their second straight WHAC crown.
Post-Match Quotes – Head coach Patrick Grashorn
“For whatever reason, the girls came out flat and seemingly nervous. We were very close to being down 0-3 after doubles if not for the come from behind win by Emily and Alyssa. They stepped up big winning the last three games of their doubles match. We took a few minutes to reset in between doubles and singles and it helped get the girls off to a good start. Angelica started things off followed by Kristi. I was very proud of our lone senior and captain, Katie, for sealing the match with her win. We now shift our attention to Indiana Tech where a win would seal the conference championship.”
