COLUMBIA, Ky. – After upsetting the third ranked team in the nation on the road last week, the 21-ranked Davenport women's soccer team looked to do it again Monday at the defending national champions Lindsey Wilson. But the Blue Raiders showed why they are still voted the top ranked team in the country as they scored two unanswered goals and took advantage of an own goal to shutout the Panthers 3-0 in their season-opener.

Natasha Gensetter and Bettina Bruelhart each netted a goal for the Blue Raiders.

Davenport allowed the first goal of the season five minutes into the match when Gensetter knocked the loose ball into the net from a crowded penalty box.

Although on paper the Blue Raiders won the shots category 5-1, the Panthers had a couple of close opportunities to even the score before heading into intermission. At the 32-minute mark, Letesha Cannonier broke away and dribbled to the goal box from midfield but without any help, the junior took a shot that deflected off a Blue Raider defender and rolled right to keeper Johanna Henrikson.

Cannonier had another opportunity to knot it up one goal apiece with 14:50 left in the half when her header just sailed over the crossbar.

Lindsey Wilson took a 2-0 lead with 34:50 left when Bruelhart sent a free kick to the penalty box where DU's defense tried to clear it but was accidentally sent into its own goal. The Blue Raiders put the match out of the Panthers reach in the 73rd minute. Carola Schneider dribbled to the right post but made a pass to the left allowed Bruelhart to tap in an open netter.

Davenport had one close opportunity in the latter half to get on the board. With less than nine minutes left, Karli Harris dribbled down the right flank but before the senior could take a shot, Henrikson made a dive to trap the ball.

The Panthers tough start to the season continues Wednesday against another top 25 team as No. 12 Martin Methodist will welcome the Panthers back to Pulaski, Tenn., for a 3 p.m. EDT kickoff.

Post-Match Notes
Lindsey Wilson won the inaugural meeting against Davenport…The Panthers have been shut out for the first time since the 4-0 defeat at Saint Ambrose (Iowa) on Sept. 22, 2012.
