SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Davenport gave up an early goal but recovered by scoring four unanswered in their season opener at Dordt College (Iowa) on Friday afternoon. Freshman Dzenan Catic recorded a pair of goals to lead the Panthers as they also got tallies from Jordan Van Oostenbrugge and Jacob Love. The Panthers will take a 1-0-0 mark into Saturday's matchup at Northwestern College (Iowa) at 6 p.m. EST.
The final team to get their 2013 regular season underway was the Davenport Panthers and they did it in convincing fashion after falling behind 1-0 early as they came back with four unanswered goals to win their season opener 4-1.
The Defenders (0-2-0) got on the board first in the opening minutes but it was all the offense they would muster for the 90 minutes of play. DU got three first half goals to lead 3-1 at intermission and the offense was highlighted by a trio of freshman.
Dzenan Catic, a freshman midfielder, recorded back to back goals midway through the half to put the Panthers on top and the scoring was finished in the opening 45 minutes by fellow freshman Jordan Van Oostenbrugge. Looking to put the game out of reach, another newcomers, Jacob Love, recorded his first collegiate goal as well to put DU on top 4-1 and that is how it would finish.
Mirza Harambasic got the win in net, posting a pair of saves, as the Panthers will return to the pitch on Saturday evening when they take on Northwestern College (Iowa) at 6 p.m. EST.
Post-Match Notes
The victory marked the first time since 2009 that DU has won a season opener…Dordt College came into the match after a very successful 2012 season that saw them finish third in the always competitive GPAC…The four goals were the tied for the second most the Defenders had given up over the past two plus seasons…All four goals were scored by freshman, Dzenan Catic, Jacob Love and Jordan Van Oostenbrugge
