GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Head coach Chris Allen was able to get in 21 different players on Saturday afternoon as the No. 7 ranked Women's Soccer team opened up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Lawrence Tech. DU got a pair of goals in the first half and added one in the second to pick up their seventh straight win on the season. The Panthers are now 8-1-0 overall and they will welcome Siena Heights to town on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. kick.
Opening WHAC play on Saturday afternoon with a short roster did not stop the Women's Soccer from posting yet another impressive win on homecoming weekend at Davenport. Lizzie Paul was firing from all over the field in the opening half and she was rewarded with a goal off a free kick from about 22 yards out in the 13th minute.
DU created a few more great chances in the opening 45 but did not get their second goal until just 41 seconds remained. Freshman Abbey Tyson took the ball just above the 18-yard box and buried it in the top right corner above the out-stretched arms of the LTU keeper to put the Panthers up 2-0 at half.
Head coach Chris Allen was able to get numerous subs in on an above average day in terms of temperature and one of the players off the bench, Emily Nielsen, recorded her first goal of the season with just under seven minutes to play. The senior took a corner kick from freshman Kilee Lovelace and after a few bounces in the box, Nielsen lofted it just above the keeper's hands.
Michelle Marcus got the win in net to improve her season record to 8-1 while helping the team post their sixth shutout of the season and third straight overall. The junior finished with three saves.
Davenport will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they welcome in Siena Heights for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
