GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Chantal Caraher scored the first goal five minutes into the Davenport women's hockey team's inaugural game but Miami (Ohio) rebounded from the early deficit and tallied six goals, four in the second period, to win the first of two meetings 6-1 Saturday night at Patterson Ice Center. Both teams will have short rest as they return to the rink Sunday for a 10:30 a.m. faceoff.

Davenport managed to be the first team to find the back of the net thanks to a speedy Caraher. Kerri Rozeboom cleared the puck from the Panthers zone and was found next to Caraher's stick, who skated across the neutral zone and won the 1-on-1 matchup with Miami netminder Dana Lovin.

But the lead would soon disappear with a pair of goals by Miami right wing Rachael Booth. Her first goal came at the 11:02 mark when she moved the puck down the left side before taking her shot from the left faceoff circle. Her second goal at 2:05 was from the opposite side.

The middle period produced a different result from the first. During a 4-on-4 matchup, Booth would complete a hat trick when she kept forcing the puck into the net around Smishek at 10:24. After Miami scored two more goals to take a 5-1 lead, the Panthers looked to have an offensive spark start when Rozeboom took a shot from the left side that just missed the right side of the net.

The Redhawks was in control throughout the period and headed into the second intermission with a 6-1 lead.

Despite allowing the six goals, Smishek stopped 35 shots while her opposite Lovin made 19 saves.

Post-Game Notes
Before the first game took place, Davenport director of athletics Paul Lowden dropped the first puck to the team captains.
