GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team didn't seem to show too much exhaustion despite having to play their second ever game less than 15 hours after the inaugural game Saturday night at Patterson Ice Center.
Lauren Yomantas kept the Panthers in the game by making 35 saves in her debut between the posts but Miami (Ohio) added two key goals in the third period to take game two 4-1 Sunday morning.
Davenport got on the board first for the second consecutive game.
Kerri Rozeboom and
Nichole Werkema worked their way across the ice with the puck to find assistant captain
Megan DeVries, who took a shot from a crowded goal crease with 12:09 left.
Miami was in attack mode for a good majority of the opening period but Yomantas kept the Redhawks scoreless until the 3:55 mark. Cassidy Guthrie moved the puck into the Panthers zone and connected with Lindsey Ellis on the left side to tie the game one goal apiece.
The Redhawks broke the 1-1 tie midway through the second period when Morgan McGrath's shot directly to the goal was stopped Yomantas, but the puck slowly rolled under the goaltender and into the goal at 8:48.
DU came up with two close opportunities to even the score again. Shorthanded, the Panthers defense cleared the puck and coincidently found the stick of Rozeboom in the neutral zone. The junior broke away from the Redhawk defense but her shot went directly to the chest of Emalee Willis.
The Panthers set up another scoring opportunity under the five-minute mark but and uncovered
Lexie Boydston shot from the left side was caught by Willis. Boydston had another scoring opportunity during a penalty kill. She took the same route from the second period only took the shot from center ice but was saved again by Willis.
Yomantas made several brilliant saves that helped keep the Panthers in the game trailing by one. Miami had two breakaway opportunities during the first 10 minutes of the third period but Yomantas prevented the Redhawks from scoring.
Miami would add two more goals at 7:49 and 4:40 to take a 4-1 lead, but the Panthers didn't walk away quietly. After the second Redhawk goal, Davenport won the faceoff and Boydston moved the puck to center ice but her shot was saved.
Davenport begins a home-and-home series with Adrian starting Friday at 8 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center. The series will shift over to Adrian's ice Saturday at 3 p.m.
