RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Just when the Davenport and Mount Vernon Nazarene women's soccer teams thought they were going to leave the University of Rio Grande campus settling a scoreless double-overtime draw Friday afternoon, Letesha Cannonier broke the ice with a golden goal with 52 seconds left to lift the 21st-ranked Panthers to a 1-0 victory in the first of a double feature of the Marge Evans Classic.
Davenport will take on host Rio Grande Saturday following the conclusion of the Cougars matchup with Union College (Ky.), which is projecting a 5 p.m. kickoff.
As the public address announcer warned both teams they are in the final minute of the match, Karli Harris prevented a defender from stealing the ball in the middle of the Cougars territory before feeding it Cannonier up front. Cannonier worked her way to the right side the keeper's box before chipping her only shot on the day into the left corner. Cougar netminder Lexus Andolino made a terrific effort using her right hand to block the shot, but it was not enough to make the save.
While the Panthers had the lone goal, they dominated all offensive categories, recording a 14-3 shooting advantage, 6-1 on goal. DU keeper Michelle Marcus made only one save in the match as she was credited her third shutout of the season.
Post-Match Quotes – Head Coach Chris Allen
On Mount Vernon Nazarene – "We got away with a very hard fought win against a very tough Mount Vernon team that lost 2-0 to the No. 2 team in the country Olivet Nazerene. We knew they would be a very hard working and skilled team, and that today's match would be very difficult."
On his team's performance – "We played hard today. Although our quality wasn't where we want it to be, we deserved the win and we keep rolling. Our players worked tirelessly all the way to the end and when you believe in yourselves as a team, we knew we would get the goal eventually. Credit goes to a great MVNU and I think they're going to do very well the rest of the way."
