MENTOR, Ohio – The Davenport D2 hockey team continued their hot start to the season picking up two more wins on Saturday at the ACHA Showcase to move to 3-0-0-0 on the year. Davenport beat Cincinnati 10-1 to start the day and followed it up with a 3-0 win over North Dakota State.
Donald Sund and
Chris McRae led the charge for the Panther offense as they each tallied three goals on the day. DU will conclude the showcase on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Utah in Mentor, Ohio.
Game 1 In the first game of the day for the Panthers
Daniel Swink got the scoring started for the team in the first period with less than 14 minutes left in the period. Cincinnati tied the game a one, but
Jake Otto came back just a few seconds later to regain the lead for DU.
Branden Burton closed out the scoring in the period to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
Chris McRae continued the scoring for the Panthers in the second period with his first collegiate goal.
Donald Sund tallied two goals in the period and Otto added another for his second of the game as Davenport had a 7-1 lead heading into the third period,
In the final period, DU did not let up off the gas and continued to put pressure on Cincinnati net minder.
Dugan Kelly scored his first goal of game early in the period, and McRae followed with his second of the game to give Davenport a 9-1 advantage. Kelly wrapped up the game with his second tally of the game as the Panthers won the game 10-1 and
Tyler Kuehl picked up the win net.
Game 2 Davenport started the game with a solid offensive attack as Sund an McRae continued to have the hot stick for the Panthers on the day for the Panthers as they each scored a goal in the first period to give DU a 2-0 lead after the first period.
In the second period the Davenport defense stood tall in front of goaltender
Tyler Kuehl as they continued to hang onto to their two-goal lead. In the final period of regulation, both teams continued to battle but neither could find of the back of the net until
Bailey Rietman capitalized on a scoring opportunity a gave DU a 3-0 win. Kuehl picked up his third in of the year and first career collegiate shutout.
The Panthers will close out the ACHA Showcase in Mentor, Ohio on Sunday at 10:30 when they face the University of Utah.
