Alpena, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team continued their northern road trip this weekend as they defeated Division II opponent Northern Michigan in both games of their two-game series. The Panthers won in controlling fashion in game one 8-1, and 3-2 in a much closer second game. The Panthers will be off for a full calendar month before returning to action Jan. 9
th in a two-game series with Midland University at the Patterson Ice Center.
Game OneThe Panthers high explosive attack carried over from the Central Michigan game as
Laken Kunz and
Catie O'Connor each netted two goals a piece to lead the way.
Chantal Caraher also recorded a score of her own, while chipping in an additional three assists to give her four points on the night.
Caitlin Harrison and
Lexie Boydston also found the back of the net for Davenport, as well as
Darian Adams. Adams also recorded an assist, which gives her nine points in the last two games.
Victoria Smishek recorded her second consecutive win, putting her record at 3-3 on the season.
Game TwoIn game two of the series, Davenport saw a much tighter contest, but still managed to come away with the victory by a score of 3-2. All of the Panthers scoring came in the first period
Lexie Boydston got things going with the first goal of the game in unassisted fashion.
Catie O'Connor tacked on to the lead with 11:36 left in the period to give her four total goals on the weekend. Boydston would then score her second goal of the game late in the first to send Davenport into the first intermission up 3-0.
The Wildcats saw new life in the second and third periods as they scored two unanswered goals, but failed to tie up the score giving Davenport the 3-2 victory. Smishek recorded 17 saves on 19 shots in her third consecutive game between the net.
"The game today (Sundays) was a battle, we were penalized too much and gave up a 3 on 5 goal. I give Northern credit for coming back and fighting hard in game 2, they really came to play" says Davenport Head Coach
Tom Hofman after Sunday's win. "The coaches feel good going into break about the way the new line combos are coming along. It was a great opportunity for Davenport and Northern to highlight women's college in Alpena during their annual 'Battle of the Bay' tournament".
The Panthers (8-6-0) will have a full month to rest before returning to action Jan. 9
th in a two-game series against Midland University. Nine of Davenport's next ten games will all be home at the Patterson Ice Center, including the two games against Midland.
