FLINT, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team opened the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association Playoffs at Flint Ice Arena with a 9-3 defeat to Robert Morris (Ill.) Friday morning. After getting only a few hours of rest to play Michigan in game two, the Panthers showed endurance on the ice as they never trailed in the game but they had to settle with a 4-4 draw. DU, which finishes the day 1-0-1 in pool play, faces Michigan State Saturday at 10 a.m.
While the tie ended the Panthers (7-21-1) 14-game losing skid, it also put a dent to the Pool B standings, which takes the top two teams to the semifinals. Michigan picked up a win over Michigan State but the Spartans handed the Eagles a loss. The Panthers need help if they are to advance to the semifinal round later in the day. They must pick up a win over Michigan State while needing Michigan to defeat Robert Morris.
Game 1 Recap
Robert Morris took control of the game scoring three goals in the span of 12 minutes into the opening period. Once the Eagles scored the third goal at 9:53,
Sara Kuzava helped
Darian Adams answer back on the Panthers behalf scoring nine seconds later. Although Robert Morris regained the three-goal lead with 6:55 left in the first,
Catie O'Connor scored her second goal of the season 1:30 later to cut the Panthers deficit in half before heading into the first break.
But the Eagles set the tone of the game by scoring two goals in the middle period and went into the second intermission leading 6-2.
Lexie Boydston scored the Panthers third goal with 8:35 left in the game but Robert Morris added three more goals in the period to take the 9-3 win.
Game 2 Recap
After going scoreless in the first four minutes of the game, Davenport quickly took a 2-0 lead in the span of 2:07. Boydston scored her second goal of the day short-handed with 15:44 left and
Kerri Rozeboom followed with her first of the day at 13:57.
Despite getting a goal short-handed, the Panthers couldn't kill their second penalty of the game as the Wolverines scored with one minute left in the opening period to trail 2-1.
Boydston would complete her three-goal day scoring 2:50 into the second period to give DU a 3-1 lead. Michigan State would take advantage of the power play to cut Davenport's lead to 3-2 just 34 seconds into the third period.
Chantal Caraher cashed in an insurance policy with a goal at the 14:15 mark and it proved to be useful as the Spartans rallied and evened the score four apiece at 11:08 and 5:55.
