GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport sophomore
Corey Murphy went the distance for the first time in his career, but a walk-off single with the bases loaded was the difference as Cornerstone's baseball team escaped with a 3-2 victory over Davenport on a cold Wednesday afternoon at DeWitt Stadium. The Panthers fall to 16-10 overall and 4-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference as they return to the Farmers Athletic Complex to host defending regular-season champion Madonna Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Panthers were one out away from forcing extra innings but the Golden Eagles (13-8, 3-2 WHAC) loaded the bases with a single and a fielding error. After an intentional walk set up a play at any base, Dillon Reust found an open gap into left field to walk away with the win.
Despite the five errors the Panthers committed in the game, Murphy (3-2) was charged for one earned run. He finished the day allowing eight hits while striking out two.
Five different Panthers tallied a hit with
Derek Dennis,
Brendan Bender and
Cody Greear stretch for a double. Bender and Greear also had the only RBI for the Panthers.
Murphy's opposite Jon Knapp went seven innings striking out five before turning it over to Luke Heller (4-1), who allowed only a base hit the rest of the way.
The Panthers struck first in the first inning when
Zac Wilson hit a two-out single, stole second and was awarded a trip to third base on a balk. The right fielder found his way home when the left-hander
Brendan Bender hit an opposite RBI double.
Cornerstone would answer back in its first appearance at the plate, using two doubles and a Davenport error to bring two runs across.
The Golden Eagles held on to the one-run lead until the sixth. With two out,
EJ Grochowalski stole second and scored on Wilson's double to center field.
Both teams had a golden opportunity to gain the lead in the seventh inning.
Cam Cooper reached on a one-out error, stole second and advanced to third on
Connor Seymour's groundout, but the centerfielder was stranded. Cornerstone, meanwhile, had the bases loaded with one out but Sessions was able to pick off the runner at second while preventing the Golden Eagles from scoring the go-ahead run. After an intentional walk, the Panthers escaped the threat with a groundout.
