No. 17 Northwestern Ohio Downs Men’s Tennis in Semifinal of Unaffiliated Group

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Needing a win to advance to the championship match of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group, the men's tennis team was unable to overcome a slow start in doubles as they fell 5-0 to No. 17 Northwestern Ohio. DU dropped a pair of close doubles matches in doubles and never recovered as the Racers advance to the title match where they will face Aquinas College. Davenport will now hope for an at-large bid to the national tournament in which the field will be announced on May 4.

In their last match against Northwestern Ohio, the Panthers were able to stake claim to a 2-1 lead after doubles as they grabbed a pair of tightly contested matches but this time it was the Racers who won those and they ended up running away with a 5-0 win.

After UNOH took No. 1 doubles 8-2, they then posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 and 9-7 victory at No. 3 to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles. It put the Panthers in a position that they had only come back from one time in program history as they would need five of six singles match wins to pull out a victory.

The comeback was short-lived however as UNOH took No. 2 and No. 3 singles both in straight sets with two other matches left on the court unfinished.

The win lifts the Racers to 20-3 on the season while DU falls to 19-7. Davenport will now await a possible at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament which will be announced on May 4.
