No. 9 Aquinas Downs No. 19 Men’s Tennis 8-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a highly anticipated matchup with their cross-town rivals Aquinas College, it was the host Saints that came out as victors on Wednesday night as they defeated DU 8-1. The contest pitted the last two undefeated teams in the conference as the Saints are ranked No. 9 and Panthers No. 19 in the latest NAIA Top-25 Poll but AQ used a 3-0 edge in doubles to cruise to the win. The loss is the first for DU in their last nine matches as they fall to 16-5.

Davenport looked to post an upset and put themselves in prime position to win their first ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season title but the Saints from Aquinas proved too much as they posted an 8-1 win at Riverview Athletic Club. AQ took a 3-0 lead after the doubles session in which they won 9-7 at No. 1 and 8-6 at No. 2 for the commanding lead.

The lone point for the Panthers was an impressive one however as Jordan Parker defeated one of the top players in the NAIA as the freshman downed Aaron Hendrick 6-1, 7-6. Hendrick was ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA singles rankings.

DU will hope to bounce back when they host No. 16 Northwestern Ohio on Friday at 3 p.m. at Farmers Athletic Complex. All fans are encouraged to wear red/black as there will be a cookout for those who dress in DU colors.
