Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team came away with the two-game weekend series sweep Saturday night as they defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 6-2.
Megan Martin led the Panthers in scoring as she netted two goals on the night, giving her four on the weekend. The Panthers will be back in action next weekend as they host No. 5 Michigan in a very important two-game series.
The Panthers saw a different Badger defense in the early goings of the game, as well as an aggressive scoring attack in which the Badgers struck first thanks to the stick of Jessica Foley. The score came with 2:57 left in the first period, in which the score remained the same heading into the first intermission.
Adjustments were made in the second period for Davenport, as the Panthers found the back of the net three times within the first 12 minutes of the period. The first score came from sophomore
Chantal Caraher, who took a reflection off the Badger net minder, and slapped one in as she was falling to her back.
Laken Kunz and
Halle Hayes would then feed
Caitlin Harrison just minutes later who recorded her fifth goal of the season to put the Panthers up 2-1.
The second period scoring assault continued as
Megan Martin was able to keep her hot stick cooking as she tallied her fourth and fifth goal of the series to give the Panthers a comfortable 4-1 lead. Freshman
Jenny Deane would then add insult to injury on the Badgers as scored her second goal on the season with the assists coming from Kunz and Harrison.
Up 5-1 to begin the third period,
Darian Adams would increase the Panther lead to 6-1, marking her team-high 14
th goal of the season.
The Badgers were able to cut the deficit to 6-2 with 1:42 left in regulation, thanks to the stick of Jess Smith. Van Orshaegen ended the day with 16 saves on 18 shots on goal, improving her record between the net to 2-0-0 on the season.
"The girls played a great second period. We started out playing down to Wisconsin's level, but picked it up and came back with 5 goals after we got scored on." Assistant coach
Megan Doyen said of her team's Saturday performance. "We are happy with the two wins and have to work on a few things before going into next weekend against Michigan".
The Panthers (12-6-2) continue their six-game home stand Friday and Saturday night as they host No. 5 Michigan in a pivotal two-game series that has massive implications on the CCWHA playoff outlook.
