GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D2 hockey team returned home for the first time in seven games as they face Michigan State in their final home game of the season.
Jacob Blok and
Branden Burton scored the only two goals for the Panthers as they lost to Michigan State 5-2 after the Spartans scored four goals in the second period. Davenport will conclude their weekend series with Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., for a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Munn Ice Arena.

After back-and-forth action to start the game, Michigan State was able to capitalize on a scoring chance early in the first after a 2-on-1 rush that they were able to tap home. With 8:40 left in the first period,
Jacob Blok got the Panthers on the board after he was able to jam home a loose puck to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.

The Spartans started off the second period the same way as the first with an early goal as they took a 2-1 lead with 15:58 left in the second period. Michigan State was able to increase their lead to two goals as they capitalized on a power play chance with 9:57 left in the second period. The Spartans continued their run in the second period as they found the back of the net with 6:08 left in the second period to take a 4-1 lead. Michigan State capped off their four goal period to take a 5-1 lead into the third period.

Davenport tried to comeback in the third period, but the Spartan net minder was able to keep the Panthers at ease until
Branden Burton scored with 1:05 left in the game, but the Panthers dropped the game 5-2 and are now 16-2-1 on the year.

The Panthers will conclude the weekend series against Michigan State on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
