Panthers Complete Sweep of Louisville 7-4

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's Division II hockey squad completed a weekend sweep of visiting Louisville on Saturday with a 7-4 win over the Cardinals. Louisville opened the first period with a fluky goal four minutes in. The Louisville defender dumped the puck in, the Davenport goalie misread the bounce, and it went right under his pads. With five minutes left in the first, Davenport's Donald Sund tied it up from Chris McRae. Seconds later DU added another on the board. The goal was scored by Austin Flores and assisted by Sund and Branden Burton. With 1:18 left in the period, Louisville managed to tie the game with a nice snap shot over Davenport's goalies left shoulder. The period ends with the teams tied at 2-2.

Both teams came flying out of the gate to start the second and both had excellent scoring opportunities. It wasn't until seven minutes into the period when DU's McRae put one home assisted by Brad Lawson and Zachary Bodziak. Seconds later, Davenport added another one scored by Tyler Thomas and assisted by Kyle McConnell and Trevor Murray. The Panthers now led 4-2 but with 11:17 left in the period, Louisville got one back on a nice snap shot that went over the pad of Davenport's goaltender. At the end of two periods DU managed to hold onto a lead of 4-3.

Four minutes into the third it was McRae getting his second of the night assisted by Bodziak and Blake Damerow. Minutes later DU tallied another on the board for a 6-3 lead. The goal was awarded to Murray and it was unassisted. Louisville came down and put their fourth of the night away to cut it to 6-4. With five minutes remaining in the period, Daniel Swink fired one top right hand corner to push their lead further out of reach. Davenport held on to their 7-4 lead and recorded their fifth win of the season.
