GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After being off for most of the winter, the Davenport men's tennis team will return to action this week as they face NCAA DII program, Grand Valley State, on Friday evening. The Panthers went 2-1 in the fall portion of their schedule. Davenport and Grand Valley State will begin their dual match at the MVP Sportsplex on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.
The men's team started their season going 2-1 in dual matches in the fall where they dropped their first match of the season against Taylor, 5-4, but the Panthers rebounded to win their next two matches of the fall as they defeated NCAA DII squad Lake Superior State, 5-4, and concluded the fall with a 6-0 win over Rochester College.
Davenport also hosted the USTA/ITA Regional Championship in fall where
Juan-Philip van Antwerpen advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles draw. At the Grand Valley State Invitational in October, the double team of
Kevin Slagh and
Haja Denise finished in second place of the double 'B' flight, while Matheus Carvalho and
Christian Woods finished fourth in double 'A' flight.
The matchup against Grand Valley State will be the second match against an NCAA DII squad this season for the men's tennis team. The Panthers are 7-8 all-time against NCAA DII teams and are 28-26 against teams that are from the state of Michigan.
Davenport will get their spring schedule underway on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. against Grand Valley State at the MVP Sportsplex.
