GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the first game of the spring season for the Davenport men's tennis team, the Panthers dropped the match 7-2 and fall to 2-2 on the season.
Matthew Boyle picked up the only singles win for Davenport, while Matheus Carvalho and
Sam Rogerson picked up the only double win. The Panthers will be in action next weekend at the Grand Rapids City Double, hosted by Hope College in Holland, Mich.
In doubles, Matheus Carvalho and
Sam Rogerson picked up win doubles number one as they edge the Lakers, 8-6. The Panthers lost in the second and third doubles matches as
Juan-Philip van Antwerpen and
Matthew Boyle dropped their match 8-2, while
Kevin Slagh and
Haja Denise lost their match 8-6.
Holding as 3-1 lead heading into singles, Grand Valley continued to roll as won at singles 1-4, and also grabbed the win at six singles. Boyle was the only Panther to record a win for the Panthers as he defeated Bryan Hodges 6-4, 6-4. The only three set match in singles was at match six where Carvalho lost the first set 2-6, before he took set two 6-3 but he was unable to complete the comeback as he lost the match in the third set 10-7,
Davenport lost the match by a score of 7-2 as the Panthers dropped to 2-2 on the season and Grand Valley State opened their season with a win to start out 1-0. Davenport is now 7-9 against NCAA DII opponents.
The men's tennis team will be in action next weekend at the Grand Rapids City Doubles hosted by Hope College in Michigan on Friday at 3 p.m.
