High Powered Offense Equals a 2-0 Start For The Panthers

Davenport would outscore Lewis 13-3 over the two game series

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Panthers are off to a hot start to the 2016-2017 season as they sweep Lewis University in a two game series this past weekend. Davenport would beat the Flyers 6-2 on Friday and 7-1 on Saturday. The high offense Panthers would fire 77 shots on goal over the two games, and connect on 13 of those shots.

Game 1 (Friday, September 30th)
Final Score: Davenport 6, Lewis 2
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 1-0, Lewis 2-3

1st Period: DU-3, LU-0
2nd Period: DU-2, LU-2
3rd Period: DU-1, LU-0
Final: DU-6, LU-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Panthers jumped to an early lead as they scored three goals in the first period, and held the Flyers scoreless. Trevor Murray scored the first goal of the Panthers season, he was assisted by Branden Burton and Zack Bodziak on the goal.
-Both teams would trade multiple goals in the second period, as each team would connect for two goals apiece. Both goals in the second period were even strength goals by Bodziak and Donald Sund.
-The third period saw the Panthers solidify the great team performance as Sund would score another goal and goal tender Devin Rosema would save all 14 shots sent his way.
-Sund led DU with two goals.
-Bodziak would be the lead assist man for DU as he notched two assists.
- Rosema saved 28 shots and only gave up two goals through 60 minutes of play.


Game 2 (Saturday, October 1st)
Final Score: Davenport 7, Lewis 1
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 2-0, Lewis 2-4

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first period saw DU take advantage of a power play opportunity as Burton would score the only goal of the period, he was assisted by Sund.
-Davenport would dominate the second period, adding two more goals and not giving up any. Both Bodziak and Murray would score, Joseph Ullstrom would assist on the goal for Bodziak.
- The third period was a dominant showing for DU as they would score four goals and only give up one.
-Murray would lead DU with two goals.
-Sund would tally two assists.
-Davenport would combine for 12 penalty minutes, Kyle Downey would be associated with half of these minutes.
-Rosema would only give up one goals while tallying 24 saves while playing the whole game.

"I am truly impressed with the dedication of my boys over the summer. Their commitment to their fitness has been a huge reason why this program has always been very competitive right out of the gate" said head coach Chris Green. He later added, "The addition of our new freshmen provides such great depth to our roster. I look forward to their development over the next couple of weeks".
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers will take this upcoming week to prepare for a two game weekend series against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The games will both be played at Patterson Ice Arena and will have start times of 8:20 p.m. for Friday and Saturday.
