GREENTOWN, Ind. - The Davenport men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Friday to even their record at 7-7 this season. The Panthers won 8-1 against Grace (Ind.) and 5-2 against Indiana Wesleyan in matches played at Howard County Tennis Center.
DU swept doubles in the Grace match including a tight 8-6 win at one doubles as
Matthew McClurg and
Matthew Boyle defeated Danila Kurkulin and Jose Marval. JP van Antwerpen picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at six singles over Caleb Yoder.
Kevin Slagh also won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) over Adam Yoder.
van Antwerpen and
Michael Digby picked up an 8-6 win at three doubles in the Indiana Wesleyan match against Tyler Abbott and Daniel Smith.
Haja Denise and Slagh also won at two doubles due to retirement by Gavin White and Joel Montgomery.
The Panthers then won three of the four matches to get the needed five points for the victory as the five and six singles match went unfinished. McClurg needed a tiebreak in his first set win and then closed it out 6-1 in the second set at one singles over Leonard Matthews. Denise won the first set 6-3 at three singles and then Montgomery retired after dropping the first game of the second set. Digby cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at four singles over Abbott.
