GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team slowly started to see the game slip away on Saturday in a matchup between the top two teams in the WHAC. The Panthers led first-place Madonna 6-2 heading into the top of the ninth, but could not close it out giving up eight runs in a 10-6 loss on Senior Day at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
Brandon White and Alex DeYonker got the start and pitched well both going into the seventh inning. White had his full arsenal on display with nine strikeouts and the first seven outs he recorded were strikeouts. White gave up a run in the second and another in the fifth trailing 2-0. He lasted 6.1 innings and allowed seven hits with one earned run. DeYonker went 7.2 innings and was lifted in the three-run eighth for the Panthers.
Jonathan Cheshire got the final out of the seventh and retired the Crusaders without a run in the eighth. He gave up a leadoff walk in the ninth and then Madonna followed with two hits. Cheshire threw a wild pitch to allow a run and another walk loaded the bases. Zack Byron singled up the middle moving everyone up a base. Shane Dokey then hit a groundout to short and the throw to force out a runner at third was deemed to pull
Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle off the base.
Caleb Leach inherited the bases loaded and with his first pitch plunked Ryan Lambrecht with the tying run.
Corey Sessions relieved Leach and walked Jalen Thomas on four pitches for the winning run. The Crusaders padded their lead as John Lauro doubled home two runs and Taylor Grzelakowski hit a sacrifice fly to right.
Jack Zimmerman pitched to two batters in the bottom of the eighth and got the win (1-1). Cheshire got the loss (3-2) allowing five earned runs in 1.1 innings with three walks.
Matt Priebe had a few key hits including his 15th double and a two-run homer in the sixth which gave DU a 3-2 lead. J.P. North went 2-for-4 with two RBI and his fourth double of the season.
Nolan Page had a pinch hit RBI single in the eighth. The Panthers will conclude the regular season with a four-game set at home against Siena Heights starting on May 5.
