Panthers Dropped 5-4 by Concordia in WHAC Tournament Opening Game

DU now plays Cornerstone at CU at 2 p.m. in elimination game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team will now have an uphill climb in order to win the WHAC Tournament after an opening game loss to Concordia by the final score of 5-4 at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Jon Targus beat the Panthers for the second time this season. He tossed all nine innings (150 pitches/87 strikes) and allowed eight hits and just one earned run. He walked and struck out five in the game and improved to 5-4 on the mound this season.

Davenport led 1-0 after the first inning as Travis Bolin hit a RBI triple to score Connor Seymour who reached on a fielding error to start the inning. Concordia's big inning was the second when they scored three runs off Corey Murphy. Omar Prieto had a RBI single and Jacob Maas had a two-RBI double over the head of left fielder Matt Priebe.

The Panthers tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the second as Priebe had a two-RBI single to center. Concordia scored once in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead as Murphy lasted just four innings and took the loss (8-3). He gave up five hits and just one earned run with two walks and two strikeouts.

Bryan Saucedo gave up a run in the seventh as the Cardinals increased their lead to 5-3. Victor Diaz had a RBI double down the right field line as the big hit. DU got within one in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle doubled after a Priebe walk. Brandon Cable reached on an error as Austin Brandt scored from third as the pinch runner. DU left two men on base however and grounded into a double play in the eighth and ninth.
