Panthers Tie One And Lose One Against Fifth Ranked Grand Valley

Davenport tied the Lakers 1-1 during the first math-up on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers competed against local opponent Grand Valley State University over the weekend and put up a fight during both games. Davenport tied the Lakers during the first game on Saturday and fell 4-1 on Sunday. The Lakers were ranked fifth in the nation and hold a record of 15-6-4.

Game 1 (Saturday, February 11th)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Looking at the shot chart it seemed like Grand Valley State should have won this game, however the Panthers defense put up a fight for the whole game. The Lakers fired 43 shots on goal during the game compared to the Panthers 18 shots. Senior Lexie Boydston did not need many shots to score as she took advantage of an opportunity during the second period to tie the game 1-1. Neither team was able to score during the third period nor the overtime period, so the game finished with a 1-1 tie.
-Boydston had the only goal for DU.
-Karley Ferguson played the whole game in net and stopped 42 of the 43 Laker shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Lakers struck first during the second game between the two teams. The Panthers successfully killed two Grand Valley power plays during the first period to keep the lead at one goal.
-During the second period neither team was able to score. The game was heading into the final period with a one-goal difference between the teams.
-Grand Valley scored two quick goals to start the third period to put this game away. The Lakers led 3-0 just two minutes into the period. Emily Ellis countered a few minutes later on an un-assisted effort to cut the lead to two goals. The Lakers scored a security goal in the 13th minute of play.
-Ellis scored the only goal for DU.
-Ferguson again saw lots of action in the net. She had 46 saves on the night, combining for an impressive 88 saves over the two games.

The Panthers did not qualify for the conference tournament, therefore their 2016-2017 season has concluded.
