GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team got back into Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Sunday as they played three games against Aquinas after shuffling around the schedule due to poor weather on Saturday. The Panthers came ready to play as they swept all three games against the Saints by scores of 6-1, 21-2 and 16-2. DU managed 49 hits in the three games batting .500 as a team. The bats came alive as all 43 runs scored were earned against the Aquinas pitching staff. The Panthers have now won 11 straight in the series and are 17-9 overall and 9-3 in the WHAC.
Game 1
Davenport got a complete game effort from
Grant Wolfram who improved to 6-1 on the mound this season. In seven innings of work he allowed four hits and four walks but did strike out six and allowed just one run. Bradley Buurstra took the loss for Aquinas going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs and five hits. He walked six and had three strikeouts.
The Panthers scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-1 lead. DU put it away with three runs in the sixth and finished with eight hits for the game.
Brian Sobieski had a pair of doubles and scored a run.
Oscar Heredia went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Jeremy Vasquez went 1-for-2 with a double and walk and also scored a run.Â
Game 2
The Panthers took a 21-2 win behind 23 hits off seven Aquinas hurlers. DU scored three runs in the first and then erupted for nine runs in the fourth for a 12-0 lead. The Panthers added four runs in the fifth and added five more in the sixth. Jordan Wahr took the loss for Aquinas going three innings and allowing five runs and seven hits.
Justin Palmbos went six innings and allowed six hits improving to 2-2 this season. He walked two and struck out two before
Brady VanSloten finished in the seventh retiring the Saints in order with a strikeout.
Andrew Figueroa went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
Jimmy Filipski also went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Nolan Page had a triple and drove in two runs.
Nolan Bryant hit a home run in his first at-bat of the season which was a two-run shot off the right field pole.
Anthony DiPonio went 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI.
Jake Bozzo went 3-for-5 in the designated hitter role with a double, two runs and three RBI.
Austin Petravicius and
Austin Lansky combined to score four runs in the leadoff spot.
Game 3
Krystien Johnson-Batillana got the win going five innings improving to 4-1 this season. He allowed seven hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts.
Caleb Leach and
Jonathan Cheshire each threw an inning in relief. Davenport took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth when they scored 10 runs. Walter Graf took the loss going four innings and allowing nine hits and seven runs.
Page went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI and hit his fifth triple of the season.
Cameron Bair went 3-for-3 with a walk, double and two RBI. Sobieski had two more doubles and a triple finishing 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. DiPonio had two more RBI going 2-for-4 with a double and triple.
