GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In one of the wildest games in Davenport baseball history, the Panthers saw Indiana Tech score 16 of their 18 runs in the first and ninth innings for a 18-13 win over Davenport at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers trailed 10-0 before they even had an at-bat as the 19th-ranked Warriors sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first.
Caleb Leach lasted just six batters and recorded one out before giving up four hits and five earned runs.
Brady VanSloten came in and did not fare well either as Indiana Tech finished with four more hits and five more runs in the inning.
VanSloten had a gutty performance as he then put together five straight scoreless innings allowing his team to get back into the game. He pitched into the ninth inning after giving up a leadoff double. VanSloten walked just one batter and struck out eight in a 124-pitch effort (88 strikes). Davenport responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and then added a run in the third. The Panthers kept it going with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to trail 10-7. Indiana Tech scored once in the seventh to increase their lead to four. The Panthers got within a run with three in the bottom of the seventh. The Warriors scored one more in the eighth and Davenport scored twice for a 12-12 tie. The ninth inning proved to be detrimental for the Panthers who saw Indiana Tech score six times to finally put the game away even though DU did score once more in the bottom of the ninth.
Josh Wiesman, the fifth pitcher of the game for Tech, got the win in 1.1 innings of relief and allowed one hit and one run with two walks. There were nine doubles, two triples and one home run hit between the teams with ideal conditions and the wind blowing out. Keith Tatum led the Warriors with four RBI. Benny Clark III went 4-for-5 with two runs and a walk in the ninth spot of the batting order.
Austin Petravicius went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Brian Sobieski went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
