Four Panthers win in singles and doubles during 8-1 victory over Lawrence Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport hosted former NAIA/WHAC foe Lawrence Tech for a non-conference match at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness. The Panthers knocked off the Blue Devils, who are currently ranked 20th nationally in the NAIA, 8-1. A couple of the singles matches needed tie-breakers to determine a winner, but Davenport prevailed in all but one of those matches.

The doubles matches were played first on the day and Davenport took an early 3-0 lead after they all completed. At number one doubles Marc Lerch and Juan-Louis van Antwerpen won 8-4, at number two doubles Matthew McClurg and Remy Johansen crushed their opponents 8-2, and Jonathan Bulmer and Max Hartman finished the sweep with an 8-5 win in third doubles.

The first singles match between Johansen and Daniel Diaz was the last match to finish on the day. Johansen lost in the opening set 6-1, came back and won the second set 7-6, and then lost the final set 7-5. Antwerpen had a tough match in second singles, he won the first set 7-6, winning the tie-breaker 7-0, and then won the second set 6-3. In third singles Lerch found himself in a similar situation, he won 7-6 (7-3) in the first set and then 6-1 in the second set. McClurg, Bulmer, and Michael Digby all won their singles matches in two sets with no tie breakers needed. McClurg won 7-5 and 6-3, Bulmer won 6-1 and 6-2, and Digby won 6-2 in both sets.

Davenport hosts another familiar WHAC foe on Sunday. The Panthers take on Indiana Tech at the MVP Sportsplex and the match is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
