Panthers go 1-1-1 over the weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers played three home games over the weekend, one against Michigan State and two against Ohio State. Davenport lost to the Spartans on Friday, tied the Buckeyes on Saturday, and then defeated the Buckeyes on Sunday 3-2. Jaiden Forrest scored the game-winning goal and Jessica Plowman scored her first goal of the season on Sunday.
 
Game 1 (Friday, February 16)
Final Score: Davenport 2, Michigan State University 8

Records: Davenport 5-20, Michigan State 15-3-1

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Davenport held the high-powered Spartan offense scoreless in the first period. The Panthers were on the power play early in the period; Michigan State was called for a tripping minor 16 seconds into the game.
-The second period was all the Spartans. Michigan State scored three unanswered goals to take a three-goal lead heading into the final period.
-The Panthers got on the board in third period, but unfortunately were still down 4-1 after the goal. Tori Dubuc scored the goal on the power play and unassisted, her fourth goal of the season. The Spartans added a goal to push the lead up to 5-1, and then Laken Kunz scored a goal. She scored on an even strength effort, assisted by Caitlin Miscovich.
-Both Kunz and Dubuc scored in the game.
-Miscovich had the only assist.
-Julia Gaynor was the goalie and recorded 38 saves.
 
Game 2 (Saturday, February 17)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first game against Ohio State was a defensive battle, as the two teams combined for two goals. Dubuc gave the Panthers the lead in the first period. She scored with 7:39 left in the period with even strength, assisted by Lexie Boydston.
-Neither team scored in the second period, Davenport went into the third period with a one-goal lead.
-The Buckeyes scored a goal with only 47 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the game 1-1. Davenport spent six minutes on the power play in the period, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunities they had.
-The two teams competed in two overtime periods, each were five minutes long. The result was a tie since neither team scored in overtime.
-Dubuc scored the only goal and Boydston recorded the only assist.
-Gaynor played all 70 minutes in net and saved 13 of the 14 shots she faced.
 
Game 3 (Sunday, February 18)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first period of play neither team scored. Davenport had more scoring opportunities as they had 13 shots on goal compared to the Buckeyes five.
-Ohio State scored one goal in the second period and held their lead heading into the final period.
-The Buckeyes increased their lead to two goals in the final period, which is said to be the worst lead in hockey. The Panthers proved that theory correct as they rattled off three consecutive goals!  Courtney Mulligan scored the first goal for DU in the eighth minute of the period to make it a 2-1 game. Less than two minutes later Plowman scored her first goal of the season in a clutch moment. Plowman scored in the 10th minute of the period to tie the game 2-2, assisted by Forrest. With 6:15 left on the clock, Forrest netted the game-winning goal, with even strength, and was assisted by Olivia Rudberg and Kunz. Davenport held off the Buckeyes for the remainder of the period for the win. Forrest leads the team in goals with 12 on the season.
-Mulligan, Plowman, and Forrest all scored one goal.
-Five different players recorded one assists, Amanda Ballestero, Boydston, Forrest, Kunz, and Rudberg.
-Julia Gaynor played goalie for all 60 minutes had stopped 19 of the 21 shots she faced.
 
UP NEXT
Davenport was able to re-schedule their postponed game against Michigan State, back on January 20, to Tuesday, Feb. 20. This will be the Panthers last game of the 2017-18 season.
