Panthers unable to stop Trine’s high powering offense

The Panthers played Trine University in a mini-series over the weekend, who are the #1 ranked team in the Central Division. The first contest saw the Thunder defeat the Panthers 7-3. In the second game, the Thunder took a 5-0 win in regulation.
 
Game 1 (Friday, February 2)
Final Score: Davenport 3, Trine University 7
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 4-18, Trine 24-0-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Trine University got on the board by scoring 1:52 in the contest. Davenport answered with an even strength goal of their own from Kyle McConnell, assisted by Marc Rotondo.
-The second period was the difference as Trine University scored three goals in the period.
-The Panthers added an early even strength goal in the third period by Trevor Murray, assisted by Evan Carroll to cut the lead down to two goals. The Thunder would counter later in the period, scoring three goals in a span of four minutes. Davenport scored another even strength goal late in the period by Bailey Rietman, assisted by Chris McRae.
-DU goals scored by McConnell, Murray and Rietman.
-Six different Panthers recorded a point on the evening, McConnell, Rotondo, Carroll, Murray, Rietman, and McRae.
-Drake Deering played 40 minutes and had 14 saves in net, while Devin Rosema played 20 minutes and recorded 12 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Trine University scored the lone goal in the opening period. The Thunder held a one-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.
-In the second period, the Thunder added another pair of goals. The Panthers struggled to stay out of the penalty box in the second period, which led to a Thunder power-play goal.
-During the final period, the Thunder added two more goals. Davenport was unable to convert on the offensive chances they had throughout the game.
 -The Thunder offense was the story of the game as the Thunder outshot the Panthers 54-18.
- Deering played all 60 minutes as goalie and recorded 49 saves.
 
UP NEXT
Davenport will face Michigan State University next weekend in a home-and-away series. Friday's game will be played at 8:20 pm in the Patterson Ice Center and Saturday's game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Michigan State University.
