GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a tough opening night, the women's hockey team came back to take on the Bearcats from McKendree University.
The Panthers came out with a much better effort at both ends of the rink, and with the play of freshman
Dayna Templeton in goal kept the game close, but McKendree was still able to come with the win, and the weekend sweep.
QUICK STATS
Final Score: Davenport 0 – McKendree 4
Shots: DU 15 – MU 55
Power Play: DU (0/4), MU (0/5)
Records: DU (0-2), MU (2-2)
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Templeton was stellar in her first collegiate start, making 51 saves in the game.
GUARDING THE TEMPLE
The Bearcats brought the same amount of attack as they did on Saturday night. However, Templeton came up big in the first period for the Panthers. She had to make some big saves while on the penalty kill, and made two saves with Bearcats on a breakaway in the first period. Despite getting outshot 17-6, the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
Davenport came out strong in the second period, putting on five shots in the first five minutes, forcing Brittnee Kenny to make some big saves for the Bearcats.
CATS ON THE ATTACK
However, McKendree started to ramp up their offensive attack. Just passed the halfway mark of the middle frame, Alysaa Albee slid a shot by Templeton that broke the ice.
The goal went to the legs of the Bearcats, and they continued to press in the Davenport end. Templeton had to be sharp to keep the Panthers in the game, and
Jessica Plowman blocked a double-digit number of shots on defense.
Less than 30 seconds left in the period, Allison Sauvola found a loose puck and scored to send McKendree to the intermission with a two-goal lead.
SWEEPING THE GAME
DU had a power play early in the third period, but it would the Bearcats who would take advantage. Tia Kay scored to put the Bearcats up by three. McKendree kept the DU offense at bay, and after a goal from Quinn Atchison, would go on to win by a final score of 4-0.
WHO'S NEXT?
