Spartans Offense Too Much for the Panthers

A goal just nine seconds into the game set the tone on Sunday

Written by Tyler Kuehl

EAST LANSING, Mich. – After a tough loss at home on Friday, the women's hockey team went on the road for the first time this season, as they were set to take on CCWHA opponent Michigan State. The Spartans had handled the Panthers throughout their history, with DU's lone win coming back in the 2016-17 season.

The Spartans controlled the game from the start. Four goals in the opening period, followed by five in the second, sent MSU on their way to their seventh win of the season.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 1 – Michigan State 11
Power Play: DU (0/4) | MSU (0/1)
Records: DU (3-4-1) | MSU (7-1)

TRIPLE LUTZ

The Spartan wasted little time getting on the board, as Julia Lutz scored just nine seconds into the game. Lutz would score her second of the game a little over five minutes later to make it a 2-0 game, and she would complete the natural hat trick just over the halfway mark of the opening period. Maddie Wolsmann scored late for the Spartans to send MSU to the intermission with a 4-0 lead.

EDGE OF THE SWORD

Early in the second period Michigan State continued to attack as they would score four goals in just under three minutes. Nadia Hoerman scored just past the two minute mark of the period to make it a five-goal game, followed by a goal from Allison Lariviere shortly thereafter. Then, Amber Danules and Hoerman scored 20 seconds apart to make it an 8-0 game. Matti Savich would net another goal for Michigan State later in the period.

GETTING ON THE BOARD

With a little over two minutes to play in the period, Tori Dubuc and Morgan Pippin would help set up Courtney Mulligan for her third goal of the season.

The Spartans would add two more goals in the third period with goals from Wolsmann and Morgan Graham, and the Spartans would go on to win by a final score of 11-1.

WHO'S NEXT?

The Panthers return home this coming Friday for a game with crosstown rival Aquinas College. The Saints are 2-7 so far in their first season in D1, and are coming off a loss to Michigan State themselves this past Friday. The Panthers are 5-0-1 all-time against the Saints, with their lone loss coming back in the 2017-18 season.

Puck drop on the 15th at Patterson is set for 8:30 p.m.
