Panthers Battle Wolverines to a Tie

Only two goal scorers between the two teams in the first game of the weekend

Written by Tyler Kuehl

CHELSEA, Mich. – After a big win at home over Adrian the week prior, the D2 hockey team traveled over to the other side of the mitten to meet with the Michigan Wolverines. DU split with the Wolverines last season to end the regular season, and looked to build off an impressive offensive performance last Friday.

It was a penalty-filled battle, but Davenport would go up by a pair thanks to their captain, Trevor Murray. However, the Wolverines would battle back with a pair of their own to send the game into overtime. Despite a power play in overtime, the Panthers could not find the game-winner, and the game would end in an uneventful draw.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 2 – Michigan 2
Shots: DU 37 | UM 30
Power Play: DU (0/4) | UM (1/5)
Records: #10 DU (8-6-2) | UM (2-1-2)

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

The Panthers wasted little time making their presence known as Murray scored 48 seconds into the game, with the assists coming from Evan Carroll and Kyle Mazur.

Drake Deering was solid in the first period, not allowing the Wolverines to take the lead away from the Panthers through 20 minutes. He would also be a key factor on DU's second goal.

Early in the second period, Deering played the puck up to Connor Seymour who then fed Murray for his second goal of the game, ninth of the season, to put Davenport up by two.

HOME COOKIN'

Michigan would find a way to get back into the game. Similar to DU, it was one man who lit up the scoreboard for the Wolverines. In the waning minutes of the second period, Brock Huber scored his first of the season to bring Michigan within one. A couple minutes into the third period, it would be Huber scoring his second of the game, and just like that the Wolverines tied the game.

The remaining minutes of regulation were filled with tension, as neither team wanted to give up the go-ahead goal. The game ended up going to overtime and, despite both teams' efforts, not Davenport nor Michigan could create any heroics, and the game would end in a 2-2 tie.

WHO'S NEXT?

The Panthers will stay out East for the night, and get set for the second game of the back-to-back with the Wolverines. Puck drop at the Arctic Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
