Sault Completes Sweep of Panthers with Impressive Offense

Four first period goals sent the Cougars on their way to their 11th win of the season

Written by Tyler Kuehl

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – After a tough loss on Saturday night, the D2 hockey team looked to earn a weekend split against the Sault Cougars, the same way the Cougars split with the Panthers at the beginning of the 2018-19 season back in Grand Rapids.

It was not meant to be. The Cougars overwhelmed the Panthers in the Sunday finale. Despite goals from point-leaders Trevor Murray and Clint Loney, the Cougars would continue their impressive inaugural season division two by completing the weekend sweep.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 2 – Sault College 10
Power Play: DU (0/4) | SC (2/5)
Records: DU (7-6-1) | SC (11-2-1)

PACK SCORING

Sault College wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Bryecton Lalonde scored his second goal of the weekend just 29 seconds into the contest. Only a few minutes later, Austin Rowe scored his seventh goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game. Just passed the halfway mark of the period, Mark Tassone tallied another goal to further extend the Cougars' lead. Ryan Vendramin only added to his outstanding season with his 27th goal of the season, and the Soo took the 4-0 lead into the first intermission.

Lalonde completed the hat trick with two goals in the first six minutes of the second period. Rowe scored his second shortly before the halfway mark of the period to make it a six-goal Cougar lead.

BREAKING THE SHUTOUT

Davenport was finally able to break through in the first minute of the third period, as Murray scored his seventh goal of the season to put the Panthers on the board.

Vendramin and Max Khull scored goals within a minute of each other before Clint Loney tallied DU's second goal with his sixth of the season.

Khull scored his second goal late in regulation, and the Cougars would complete the weekend sweep in convincing fashion, winning 10-2.

WHO'S NEXT?

DU takes a week off before a big home-and-home with in-state rival Adrian College. The Bulldogs are currently 1-5, but have three more games before meeting with the Panthers. They have a home-and-home with Michigan State next week, before taking on Trine the night before they meet with Davenport on Friday, Nov. 15. The Panthers are 3-5-1 all-time against Adrian, with a tie that occurred last season, and Adrian winning the other two matchups. Since the reincarnation of the D2 program, Davenport has never beaten the Bulldogs.

Puck drop for the first game of the back-to-back is at 8:20 p.m. at Patterson.
