GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The women's hockey team met with the Miami RedHawks for the second time this weekend on Sunday, and looked for a better start than they had on Saturday night.
While the Panthers got a few chances in the opening period, and keeping the score close, the RedHawks opened the game up in second period, scoring six goals on their way to their ninth win of the season.
QUICK STATS
Final Score: Davenport 0 – Miami (OH) 7
Shots: DU 8 | MU 55
Power Play: DU (0/2) | MU (0/2)
Records: DU (4-11-1, 1-6) | MU (9-9, 8-4-1)
In the opening 20 minutes the RedHawks came out strong against the Panthers, but DU only gave up a single tally in the first period, as Izzy Aerni banked one in from the side of the goal just over five minutes into the period. Yet, that was all the Panthers would give up in the period, as
Dayna Templeton stopped the other 13 shots she faced.
In the second period, the RedHawks started to find their scoring touch. Just a few minutes into the period, Sarah Peterson scored her first of the season to make it a 2-0 game. That was followed by a pair of goals by Emily Sloan to extend Miami's lead to four. Fiona Curran scored her first goal as a RedHawk with only minutes left in the period, and Sara Gargasz scored her fifth goal of the weekend to set Miami into the third period with a six-goal lead.
Early in the final frame Maizy Crandall scored her fifth of the season, and the RedHawks would complete the weekend sweep by a final score of 7-0.
WHO'S NEXT?
The Panthers stay in their CCWHA schedule next weekend as they take on the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan currently sits right ahead of DU in the conference standings, as both teams eye the sixth and final playoff spot as the season winds down.
The Wolverines have won all but two meetings with the Panthers, with Davenport earning a win back in October of 2014. Game one will be at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
