ROLLA, Mo. – The Davenport baseball team is firing on all cylinders over the last six games with six straight wins and 10-plus runs scored in each of those wins. On Sunday, the Panthers completed a four-game sweep of Missouri S&T with wins of 12-7 and 12-2. Davenport is now 6-1 overall and Missouri S&T falls to 1-7.
Game 1
The Panthers broke open a close game with seven runs in the fifth inning. The seven-inning affair saw DU lead 9-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Missouri S&T then got three runs in the sixth and seventh off the bullpen to make it a bit closer. DU answered with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh.
Cal Djuraskovic got the start and lasted 3.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and one run with four walks and three strikeouts.
Evan Maize entered in the fourth with DU clinging to a 2-1 lead and picked up the win. He faced Brady Voss with the bases loaded and struck him out to end the inning. In the fifth inning, DU got off to a good start with a leadoff home run by
Carson Eby, his first as a Panther. Cade Meier ended his day on the mound for the Miners after a walk to
Hunter Ruhstorfer and a
Nolan Anspaugh single.
Nolan Bryant put down a bunt single to load the bases and then
Jacob Buchberger launched his third home run of the season for a grand slam on a 1-0 pitch and a 7-1 lead.
Noah Marcoux hit a RBI ground-rule double for an 8-1 lead. Eby got his second RBI of the inning on a single to left field for a 9-1 lead.
Duncan Gillett pitched a perfect fifth inning but ran into trouble and gave up three runs in the sixth.
Michael Lincoln stranded the bases loaded getting the final out in the sixth.
Drew Buffenbarger got two outs in the seventh but yielded three runs and walked three.
In the seventh inning, Marcoux led off with a single and
Roman Trujillo singled up the middle as Marcoux took third. Eby was hit by a pitch with two outs after Trujillo was caught stealing and
Christian Petre struck out swinging.
Aaron Cardoza came through with a triple and drove in two runs and later scored himself on an error.
Pete Zeimis made his first appearance in the bottom of the seventh and got the final out.
Game 2
Davenport got a mercy-rule win by the tune of 12-2 in seven innings to complete the four-game sweep of the Miners. DU scored twice in the first as Buchberger homered for the fourth time this season after a
Nolan Bryant one-out double. Petre drove home a run on a groundout in the second for a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers took a 3-1 lead into the fourth and scored five times to extend their lead to 8-1. Petre singled with one out and Anspaugh followed with an infield hit. Bryant brought them both home with a double down the left field line. Matthew Lamb, the starting pitcher for Missouri S&T, was lifted at that point. David Kephar was greeted with a RBI single by Buchberger to score Bryant. Marcoux later singled up the middle to score two more runs.
DU scored in each of the next three innings as well to run their total to 12 runs. Harvey had a RBI single in the fifth and later in the seventh had an inside-the-park home run as
Cobe Huizenga scored from first with one out. Buchberger got the start on the mound and went five innings for the win. He allowed three hits and one run with one walk and four strikeouts.
Max Swan pitched a scoreless sixth and
Luke LaLumia gave up a run in the seventh.
Series Notes
The Panthers batted .409 and outscored the Miners 49-21. DU hit nine doubles, three triples and five home runs. Marcoux hit .667 going 10-for-15 with seven runs, three doubles, a triple and eight RBI. Harvey hit .588 going 10-for-17 with four runs, a double, a triple, a home run and six RBI. Buchberger hit .467 going 7-for-15 with eight runs, a double, three home runs and 12 RBI. The Panthers also stole 17 bases and Anspaugh set the school record with four steals in Game 1 today.

DU will travel to Missouri-St. Louis after two days off during the spring break trip. The Tritons and Panthers will play on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. (3 p.m. local time) in a single nine-inning game. UMSL is currently 2-5 overall this season.
