Pitching Carries Panthers past Maryville in sweep

James Rogers and Evan Maize each got wins

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Panther baseball team took two more games in The Gateway City against Maryville on Saturday by final scores of 9-1 and 8-4. Pitching carried the club as James Rogers went six solid innings in game one. Evan Maize also tossed four relief innings and allowed one run in game two. DU is now 9-2 overall while Maryville is 5-7.

Game 1
Rogers picked up his second win of the season and put together one of the best outings in his career. He tossed six innings and allowed just one run in the second inning. Rogers allowed three hits and walked two with seven strikeouts. He was one strikeout shy of his career-high and threw 97 pitches (63 strikes).

Maryville led 1-0 through three innings as Ryan Louck was pitching very well for the Saints. Davenport tied the game in the fourth inning as Nolan Bryant walked and Jacob Buchberger singled. Travis Harvey advanced Bryant to third with a fly out to center. Noah Marcoux flied out to center for a sacrifice fly.

Davenport blew it open with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Marcoux had a two-out RBI single for a 2-1 lead. Kamrin Markwardt followed with a RBI double and then Hayden House replaced Louck. Roman Trujillo greeted him with a RBI single after DU led 5-1.

The Panthers got a leadoff single by Gaetano Vallone in the seventh. Nolan Anspaugh followed with a two-run home run to left on a 2-0 pitch for his second bomb of the season. Buchberger singled with one out and stole second. Markwardt later had a sacrifice fly and Trujillo had a RBI infield single. Grant Jebbia gave up a hit in the seventh but also had two ground outs and a strikeout.

Game 2
Davenport scored three times in the third inning against starter Kaleb Huxford. Buchberger had a bases-loaded single to plate two and Marcoux walked with the bases loaded for the 3-0 lead. Maryville tied it up in the bottom of the third which ended the day for starter Cal Djuraskovic. Evan Maize finished the game and got run support with four runs in the top of the fourth.

The rally started with two outs and a Vallone walk. Anspaugh was hit by a pitch and Bryant walked to load the bags. Buchberger doubled down the right field line to score a pair and Huxford's day was done. Harvey followed with a two-run double down the right field line against Donovan Meloy for a 7-3 lead.

Vallone and Anspaugh singled in the sixth and Bryant had a sacrifice fly to score Vallone. Maize gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh as Austin Tapella had a RBI double. 

UP NEXT
The teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow at noon central time as the Panthers will look for the series sweep to end their spring break trip.
