Five second period goals helped the Panthers earn the weekend split against the Lakers.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The D2 hockey team fell in a tight game on Friday night, and looked to get revenge on the Grand Valley State Lakers on Senior Night at Patterson.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 9 – Grand Valley State 2
Shots: DU 55 | GVSU 24
Power Play: DU (1/7) | GVSU (1/8)
Records: #8 DU (16-11-3-1) | #9 GVSU (14-14-2)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Connor Seymour led the Panthers with a goal and two assists, with Jean-Phillipe Montmarquette helping out with three assists. Clint Loney, Adam Hulsey and Kyle Mazur each had a goal and an assist, with Drake Deering picking up the win stopping 22 of 24 shots.

FINALLY SCORING

After being shutout the night before, the Panthers were relentless in the opening minutes of the contest. A little over two minutes in, Brody White led a rush into the Grand Valley zone, and let a wrister go that GVSU's David Johansson stopped. However, the rebound popped out to Connor Seymour who buried his 16th of the season to give DU their first goal of the weekend.

Less than a minute later, the Panther forecheck forced a turnover in the Lakers' zone. Jean-Phillipe Montmarquette sent a pass to Cole Uzzell at the left point. Uzzell then blasted a shot through traffic in front of the GVSU goal and in for his eighth of the season to put Davenport ahead by two.

ANCHORING THE GAME

The game would settle down, and GVSU would find a way to get on the scoreboard as Zach Borchardt would score on the power play to cut the DU lead to one.

Just over a minute later, Davenport would start to scramble in their own zone, allowing Shane Haggerty to score his ninth of the season to tie the game at two.

NOT REALLY SHORTHANDED

Davenport would jump back to the lead just under two minutes into the period, as Harry Newton scored his third of the season by placing a beautiful tip over the shoulder of Johansson.

A few minutes later, the Panthers found themselves on a penalty kill. Evan Carroll picked off a Trevor Zenas pass and scored on a breakaway to put DU up by two. 56 seconds later, Loney poked the puck by Laker defenseman Allen Hughson and took off down the ice. He would go down and score his 16th of the season to put Davenport up 5-2, ending Johansson's night.

Late in the period, Davenport would convert on the power play as Connor Seymour scored his second of the game. Only 19 seconds after that goal, Kyle Mazur ripped a shot passed Cody Denison for his ninth of the season, and Davenport carried a 7-2 lead into the third period.

In the third period, the Panthers capped off the impressive afternoon with Adam Hulsey's fourth goal of the season, followed by Carroll's second of the game, and the Panthers would take the win by a final score of 9-2.
