FORT DODGE, Iowa - Davenport men's rugby 15's journeyed to Iowa Central Community College on Saturday and improved to 2-0. It was a physical match with a strong and fast opposition, but our Panthers prevailed 54-31.
In the first half, the Panthers dominated possession of the ball scoring five tries to give them a big early lead. With great ball movement and strong ball running, Davenport went up 33-5 at half. The Panther forward pack dominated the Triton scrums, giving Davenport a strong platform to score. The try scorers for DU were
Alex Null,
Matt Kelly, Chipo Mupso, Dom Lamancusa, and Jono Kutzli.
The second half, the Tritons began their mounted comeback. Their number 6, a freshmen, had a hat trick of tries, scoring two in the second half. ICCC's number 12 also picked off a pass for a 70-meter try. The Panthers were looking tired and the Tritons took advantage of the momentum in their favor, and outscored us, four tries to three, scoring their last try at the final minute of the match.
Try scorers for Davenport in the second half were Kutzli,
Ethan Howard, and Sam Vanderwest.
Davenport travels to Wheeling next weekend, October 16, for a non-conference matchup.
