SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - It was October 10 when the D2 Hockey team last hit the ice after two straight weekends away and they were chomping at the bit with a pair of wins at Lake Superior State over the last two days. DU won 4-2 last night and 3-1 this afternoon over the Lakers.
The affair yesterday was evenly matched as the Lakers had 25 shots on goal compared to 24 for the Panthers. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play as DU was 0-for-6 and LSSU was 0-for-4.
Jack Sanko opened the scoring at 3:32 of the opening period with an assist from
Jacob Demeter. The Lakers tied it up at 10:09 of the second period but then
Will Healy netted his first goal of the season at 14:38 without an assist.
Entering the third period, Sanko scored again at 10:25 with helpers from
Luke Nickolaus and Demeter. LSSU answered just 18 seconds later as Justin Smith scored his seventh of the campaign. With the game in the balance, Davenport added an insurance goal at 18:34 as
Ryan Gamber scored his second of the year with assists from
Nathan Hartline and
Spencer Sandberg.
Drake Deering made 23 saves to earn the victory between the pipes.Â
The Panthers won again 3-1 on Saturday despite being outshot 32-25 by Lake Superior State. The Panthers weathered a storm in the second period by the Lakers who had 17 shots in the period compared to seven for the Panthers.
Sandberg scored his third of the season at 2:41 of the first period from Gamber. The Lakers tied the game at 10:47 of the second period on the power play as Brett Ciupka scored it from Bryce Dirscherl. Sanko scored the game-winning goal at 2:12 of the third period and then Sandberg scored again on an empty-netter at 19:32. Brendan Bogema got the start in net for DU and made 31 saves.Â
