GLIAC Release
GLIAC - Davenport women's lacrosse freshman,
Maddy Haynes, was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Panthers to a pair of road wins over Concordia-St. Paul, their first victories ever against the Golden Bears (0-5 prior). Haynes notched six ground balls and six caused turnovers for the week as the Panthers outscored the Golden Bears by a total of 31-16, including 20-5 in the second half alone.
"Maddy is a player with a wide range of ability that we noticed early on," said head coach,
Rob Harris. "When the team needed her to play defense, she jumped into the role with 100% effort. This weekend's success for her comes at no surprise to her team and coaches and she's the girl that will do everything for her team. She was making big plays when big plays were needed in order to have success this weekend."
This marks the fourth weekly honor for Davenport this season and ninth overall since joining the GLIAC prior to the 2018 season, which includes five on defense and four on offense. With that being said, Haynes is the first Panther freshman to ever garner the recognition on the defensive end.
The sweep over the Golden Bears improved the Panthers' record to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the GLIAC. Not including the 2020 campaign (only five games played), Davenport has now won at least eight games in a season nine times in 13 years of program history.
Next up on the schedule, Haynes and her teammates have three games remaining for the 2021 regular season, all of which will be at home. The first of those three will come on Friday when Davenport welcomes Northern Michigan (6-5, 4-2 GLIAC) to the DU Turf Field for a 5:30 p.m. opening draw.
