CALEDONIA, Mich. - The 2021 GLIAC Champions are your Davenport Panthers! The baseball team made a great late-season run winning 10 straight games and captured the outright GLIAC title for the first time on Sunday with a 16-1 win over Parkside. The Panthers (26-14, 19-9) were able to claim sole possession of the title because Wayne State defeated Northwood, 11-6, in Detroit. The scoreboard watching was in full effect all day as both teams started around noon. Davenport took care of business getting up early and the Warriors took down the Timberwolves to earn a split in that series.
"I am really proud of these guys and the effort all season," said head coach
Kevin Tidey. "We were fighting through adversity in the middle of the season and started playing really well once we got back to full strength. The Wayne State series showed we could make a run at this and we stayed focused in getting all four wins against Parkside. It feels good to win this championship at home and now we get ready for the conference tournament."
Davenport scored in each of the first seven innings against the Rangers and left no doubt. The Rangers did not get their first hit until the fourth inning off
Duncan Gillett and scored their lone run in the fifth inning. Gillett got his first win of the season (1-0) going five innings and allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Nolan Anspaugh collected his 11th home run of the season in the fourth inning and also had a double and triple in his first three at-bats. He could not get that elusive single of all things during his last three at-bats finishing 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Carson Eby went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Travis Harvey drove in two runs and scored twice finishing 2-for-4 with a triple.
Kamrin Markwardt and
Hunter Ruhstorfer also had two RBI.Â
Davenport collected 16 hits today and for the series outhit the Rangers, 64-24. DU also outscored Parkside, 56-8. Davenport finished with six doubles, three triples and one home run among their 16 hits.
Dalton O'Boyle,
Zach Haefer and
Cal Djuraskovic also pitched in relief and did not allow a run in four innings.
