GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's ACHA Division II program hosted Lake Superior State for a weekend series and came away with a split against the Lakers at Patterson Ice Center.
The Panthers won 4-3 in a shootout on Friday.
Spencer Sandberg and
Luke Nickolaus staked DU to a 2-0 lead in the second period. Nicholas Anderson came back to make it 2-1 at 17:46 of the second period for the Lakers. LSSU scored the first two goals of the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Hayden Goldstein scored his fifth of the season followed by Derrick Brown's seventh of the season. Nickolaus sent the game into overtime with the tying goal at 17:46 from
Arian Starin.
The teams went into the shootout after nothing was decided in a five-minute overtime period. Goldstein and Justin Smith were denied for LSSU, while Nickolaus and Lukas Lyszyk each scored for the Panthers.
Drake Deering stopped 48 shots in net for Davenport.
The Lakers evened the weekend series on Saturday with a 4-2 win. Sandberg got the scoring started with his fourth goal of the season at 3:05 of the second period. Lake Superior State would then score the next four goals to take command. Justin Smith, Derrick Brown, Andrew Langford, and Jason Cossette each scored for LSSU with Cossette netting a short-handed goal at 15:11 of the third period. Lukas Lyszyk got his third goal of the season at 19:32 from
Nathan Hartline and Sandberg. Deering stopped 35 shots on the day for the Panthers.
