DECATUR, Ill. - The Davenport men's wrestling team was able to send two wrestlers to the Millkin Open on Saturday.
Manuel Leija wrestled at 133 pounds and placed second while Ethan Ramsay wrestled at 197 pounds and placed fourth.
Leija, who competed at the NCAA Division II nationals last season, got off to good start in 2022-23. He won by tech fall over Cole Blalock of Huntingdon 21-6 in the quarterfinal. He then defeated DJ Millett of Millikin by fall at 6:31 in the semifinals. During the final match, Leija battled with Brock Beck of Central College (Iowa) and fell by decision at 5-4.
Ramsay fared well in his first collegiate competition and won his first match by fall at 3:29 against Mac Hirsh of Huntingdon. He dropped his next match by fall at 1:27 against Montgomery Mills of Westminster College and had to fight back in the consolation bracket. He beat Jose Armando Ferrer of Aurora 5-4 and then had one of the quickest pinfalls in DU history needing just 21 seconds to defeat Cameron Baker of Kentucky Wesleyan. In the third place match, Drayden McKerrow of Kentucky Wesleyan avenged his teammate's loss with a win by fall at 1:05.
