ALBION, Mich. - The men's wrestling squad made the short trip to Albion College over the weekend for an open meet. The Panthers were represented by seven wrestlers in the event.
Manuel Leija at 133 pounds finished third and gained 14.5 team points.
Tyson Emmons claimed victory in the 141-pound bracket for the best showing by a Panther in this short season with 24 points. Ethan Ramsey at 197 pounds also picked up two wins and earned 5.5 points.
Emmons competed for the first time this season and had to win five straight matches to capture the first place honor. He won three of his matches by fall including the first-place match in 1:57 against Alex Savering of Hiram College. He opened with a win by fall at 2:15 over Andrew Sas of Otterbein and next took on Dante Wurster of Cornerstone and won a major decision 12-1. In the quarterfinals, he disposed of Mathew Martinez of Southwestern Michigan by fall at 1:54. In the semifinals, he beat Aidan Bernard of Adrian College by a 15-7 margin.
Leija took a 18-5 major decision in his first match at 133 over Ryan Weaver of Cleary. He then knocked off Austin Killburn of Mott C.C. in a close 4-1 decision. Trevor Boryla of Augustana won in the semifinals over Manuel just 1-0 in a great match. Leija then won his next two matches to claim third place. He advanced by medical forfeit to the third-place match and beat Austin Matheney of Albion 6-4 in a sudden victory.
Ramsey came out fast in his two matches with a 16-0 technical fall over Kody Edwards of East Stroudsburg and a win by fall at 2:14 against Isiah Leasure of Muskingum. He ran into a tough Jarrod Setliff of Otterbein falling by fall at 2:26. Bode Brown of Albion then ended Ramsey's day by major decision 15-7. Lucas Nagle at 141 also was able to win his second match over Tamas Eder of Otterbein 17-1 by technical fall.
