KENOSHA, Wis. - Headlined by
Crue Cooper (pictured) taking the 197 pound title on Saturday, the Davenport University men's wrestling team competed at Parkside's Jim Koch Wisconsin Open. That run by Cooper was good for 22 team points while
Ethan Ramsey placed second, also at 197 pounds, for 17 team points and
Manuel Leija finished in third at 133 pounds for 17.5 team points. Next up for the Panthers is the North Central College Invite on Saturday with the action set to begin at 9 a.m. central time.
Cooper advanced with a bye in round one to start his day before winning by major decision over Jacob Juska of Harper College in the quarterfinals (14-2), fall against Chase Stegall of Maryville in the semifinals (2:47) and fall over Ramsey of Davenport in the first place match (5:50). Ramsey won his first three matches of the day including a fall over Marshall Vantassel of Northern State in round one (1:05), fall against Cole Kenyon of Findlay in the quarterfinals (2:06) and close decision over Alexander Drmac of McKendree in the semifinals (13-10).
Like Cooper, Leija was given a bye in round one before pinning Brian Rea of Harper College in the quarterfinals with just 45 seconds remaining in round three. After losing by fall to Troy Dolphin of Parkside in the quarterfinals (4:14), Leija bounced back to pin Ryan Ripplinger of McKendree in the consolation semifinals (2:34) and defeated Matthew Chi of Parkside in the third place match (5-2).
