GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The ACHA Division II hockey team sent the senior class out happy with a 7-6 overtime win over Trine on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center. Davenport's ninth win of the season was also likely their most fulfilling as they got the job done against a Trine team that beat them 5-1 in Angola, Indiana the day before. Not only that but they also came back from a 3-0 deficit in this one to secure the victory.
Trine looked to be on their way to a weekend sweep of the Panthers with that comfortable 3-goal lead midway through the second period. The Thunder scored the only goal of the first period off the stick of Jonathan Yanovsky. William Casey and Joey Lajcaj increased their lead with Lajcaj scoring on the power play at 9:19 from Owen Engel.
DU then started their comeback scored just over three minutes later as
Arian Starin put one home from
Luke Nickolaus and
Hugo Fonovic. The pressure was really on the Thunder as just 21 seconds later on the power play it was
Spencer Sandberg with the goal and assists from
Brody White and
Jeff Rahilly.
Trine regained their composure early in the third period with goals from Engel and Nolan Dresch. The Panthers down 5-2 would not go away. Griffin White scored his first goal of the season at 4:53 on the power play from
Nathan Hartline and
Alexander Brown. Rahilly got into the fun at 6:58 with his ninth goal of the season from
Ryan Nicholson. Sandberg would tie it up at 5-5 moments later from
Tyler Blackburn and Starin.
Fonovic gave DU its first lead of the game at 9:50 of the third period from Starin and Nickolaus. Dillon Fox with 29 seconds remaining in regulation tied it up at 6-6 from Casey to set up overtime. In the extra session, DU had a 2-on-1 breakaway and Fonovic delivered a perfect pass to the stick of White who blasted it in with 21 seconds left in overtime for the winner.
Drake Deering got the win in net and came up big in the third period and overtime.
