WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - First-year head coach,
Kathryn Bzdafka, picked up her first doubleheader sweep as a Panther on Monday as Davenport rolled past Fairmont State, 9-1, in five innings before defeating Holy Family in the nightcap, 6-1. Back to the .500 mark overall at 4-4, Davenport will face Gannon (12:15 p.m.) and Nova Southeastern (2:30 p.m.) on Tuesday.
Emma Miller (3-1) started game one and lowered her season ERA to 0.84 in the process. Miller surrendered just one unearned run on three hits to go with one walk and three strikeouts.
Offensively,
Emma Embry went deep for the first time in her career with a two-run homerun in the top of the second. The next inning,
Riley Hasseld also tallied the first RBI of her career with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored
Gabby Palazzolo. In the fourth, Davenport put up a five spot as
Lindsay Goodman, Palazzolo and Hasseld each singled in a run before
Alexis Koza forced in a pair, also with a single, to make it 8-0. DU's ninth and final run came in the fifth when Palazzolo became the fourth Panther with two batted in joining Hasseld, Koza and Embry.
Against Holy Family,
Ellie Muilenburg (1-3) picked up where Miller left off with seven innings of one-run ball on four hits, two free passes, and eight punchouts. The Tigers' offense didn't get that lone run on the board until their second-to-last batter of the game, Lauren Hagy, hit an RBI double down the right field line.
In the box, all six of Davenport's runs came home on singles including Embry (x2), Hasseld,
Brooke Cowan, and
Rylie Kalina. Eight of the nine Panther batters that started the game got a hit after six of the nine did so in the first game.
