PITTSBURG, Kan. - It was a memorable couple of days for the Davenport track and field program as they were able to send four student-athletes to the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.
Isaiah Schafer stole the show as he became a national champion in the shot put and also placed eighth in the weight throw to become an All-American in both events. He became the first Panther to win a national championship in one event since the transition to NCAA Division II. He also became a six-time All-American between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Schafer on his first attempt had a throw of 62' 4" and earned 10 team points in the process. Earlier on Friday, he competed in the weight throw and placed eighth with a throw of 64' 7.75" which also was on his first attempt. The top eight in any event earn All-American honors.
Emma Schafer also placed eighth in the pentathlon with 3,688 points and earned All-American honors. She won the shot put with a throw of 41' 2.5" and was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 seconds. Also competing was
Noah Dooley who finished 15th in the heptathlon with 4,433 points. He won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.86 and was also fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.20).
Ethan Flores ran in the 60-meter hurdles but did not qualify for the finals with a 16th-place finish at 8.99 seconds.
"It was a great weekend and we are really proud of how our student-athletes competed," said head coach
Scott Cook. "We had some ups and downs and learned a lot. It was unbelievable to watch Isaiah win a national title, something that he has worked so hard for. I am also very thankful for great assistant coaches like Coach Weir and Coach Adams that always put our athletes in a position to do great things."
